Light Company – The Boy Who Sat On Ocean Floors
EP Review
It’s not that often that you hear Peterborough, Ontario mentioned when discussing up and coming music. However, the sound of post-rock band Light Company would be hard to ignore no matter what city they chose to be based out of.
The quartet consisting of Michael Langiewicz (Vocals & Guitar), Adam Langiewicz (Percussion & Backing Vocals), Lukas Wojcicki (Bass & Backing Vocals) and Shayne Ernst (Guitars & Backing Vocals) is spread over four cities and two provinces but despite their separation has maintained a roster of shows and have pulled together quite the impressive debut EP. Quite the feat for a band that lives together let alone one with its members living kilometers apart.
The Boy Who Sat On Ocean Floors is a well-oiled combination of technical musicianship and poetic lyric writing. While the EP isn’t your typical post-rock listening it incorporates many elements characteristic to the genre. The five-song EP, though short, isn’t short of compelling rhythms or textures that at times hypnotize the listener. The juxtaposition of the technical and ambient elements of this EP is definitely something worthy of note as well. Altogether this release is extremely well balanced. Never did this listener feel as if the music was overly complex or too simple. It straddled that beautiful middle line that great music inhabits.
Nevertheless, what separates Light Company from the pack is their ability to elevate the story-telling quality of the post-rock genre with their incorporation of vocals and lyric. A component that is not typical of the post-rock genre, which is generally instrument heavy and devoid of vocals.
The group hopes to bring post-rock to a wider audience and this element is what puts that goal in reach for Light Company. The listener isn’t solely entranced by the textures and tonal qualities of the music but also by the almost story-telling lyrics. Langiewicz’s vocals compliment the music beautifully never overpowering the instrumentation. It’s hard for me to even speak of the vocals as a separate element because it comes off so seamlessly when paired with the music.
I hope this is only the first of what we see from Light Company because this band may be giving a well-deserved voice to the post-rock genre.

As multicultural and cosmopolitan as Toronto is, it seems like the city has been a bit starved of independent, electronic and/or dancefloor oriented artists. Sure we have DJ Mag posterboys come in and play their prerecorded sets to a spray tanned audience, but surely Toronto’s listeners deserve exposure to electronic artists who are pushing boundaries of how are generation has understood club and electronic music culture.
Finally quenching the thirst of Toronto ravers and electronic music aficionados – Andy Stotts recent live show in Toronto served testament to this city’s ever expanding consciousness of music culture. As part of the Foundry series running through March, Andy Stott provided a night certainly worth remembering on Saturday the 18th. With critically acclaimed albums such as We Stayed Together, Passing Me By and his most recent “Luxury Problems” fans are undoubtedly aware of Stott’s heavy, industrialized, broading yet slow sound. Call it dub-techno, post-techno, post-rave or whatever pigeonhole term, Stott’s style seems more suited for an intimate listen on the subway rather than for fistpumping.
But Andy Stott did something special that night at the Great Hall’s Black Box Theatre. Initially Stott slowed the tempo and on came a barraging assault of dubbed, techy sounds. Working through some of his own music, the initial “how do I dance to this” was easily overcome as he guided us into his world of atmospheric yet heavy sounds. You see, Stott’s music occupies a nebulous zone between an industrial meditation and the dancefloor. This sound of his easily translated onto the dancefloor as he shifted from dub techno to jungle seamlessly, and with the same intense yet spacious sound.
Did he deliver? He did more than delivered - he carved out the environment and molded Black Box theatre some dreadnought in the abyss of the dark ocean that is Andy Stott’s sound. Far too pretentious, too abstract? All I can say Is that you had to be there!

For most small bands the big city of New York can swallow you up and spit you out with no remorse but that was not the case for quartet, Vampire Weekend.

Incorporating elements of world music into their version of indie pop rock the band took off with Internet buzz and high profile tours playing a big role in their success. The quartet of Columbia University students, Ezra KoenigRostam BatmanglijChris Tomson, and Chris Baio had their first big break when they toured with the Shins. However, their most fortunate misfortune was having their music all over the Internet that led to their Internet success and three subsequent tours before their debut album had its official release. The band received praise from Rolling Stone and Spin magazine even before the 2008 release of the self-titled Vampire Weekend. If that wasn’t enough success the band’s 2010 showing Contra solidified their position in indie rockdom with success that brought them to festivals worldwide, spots in film soundtracks, a Grammy nomination and much more.

Throughout their career Vampire Weekend have straddled lines. They are a fun band that never forgets to take their music seriously, experimental but still familiar and unifying though diverse in influence. It is no wonder that fans have been discussing the third album for almost two years and have bought into almost every rumor that rears its head.

Although rumors have been circulating since 2011 about Vampire Weekend’s third album it wasn’t until 2013 that the band themselves confirmed the completion of Modern Vampires in the City. The most I can find of this album is the track “Unbelievers” which is a track that has all the candor of a revitalizing Vampire Weekend and has left me in great anticipation for this third installment in the Vampire Weekend saga.

In his short career James Blake has made quite the name for himself. Before even releasing a full-length album the young man had, in 2010, been nominated for the Mercury Prize, came in second for Sound of 2011 and had a track at number eight on Pitchfork’s top 100 of 2010. There was no surprise that 2011 proved to be a huge year in the Blake camp with the release of his self-titled full-length and touring worldwide. However, what now does 2013 have to offer the young musician?
Just today, listeners tuned in to BBC Radio 1 to hear the latest track, “Retrograde”, from James Blake’s upcoming release Overgrown. The track has the feel that you expect from Blake but something seems warmer and happier in a way. The track has a sense of hope that was absent from James Blake. The somber heart-broken musician of the first album seems to be in recovery and it reflects in his music. It excites a fan to not lose what they found captivating about an artist as they change from work to work.
Shaping up to be a busy year for Blake with a video being released for “Retrograde” on February 10th and the album set for release on April 8th alongside a rigorous touring schedule and a showing at Coachella. Hopefully I get the opportunity to see him as he passes through my city and you get the chance to catch him as he comes through yours.

After a stellar showing on Metropolis Pt. I, the M Machine are looking to crank out their latest installment to their debut album and from what is out there so far you can only expect a second dose of success for the San Franciscan trio of Ben Swardlick, Eric Luttrell and Andy Coenen.

It’s shaping up to be a big year for the trio, kicking off 2013 with he announcement of their latest project slated for release on February 19th. But firstly, some history, the group formed in 2011 and released their debut through Grammy award winning artist, Skrillex’s, label OWSLA. A concept album where each track was a chapter in the story of a dystopian metropolis the group experienced enormous success for their unique take on electronic music creating experimental electronica that you cannot help but dance to. Songs like “Glow”, “Promise me a Rose Garden” and “Immigrants” were tickling the ears of music fanatics worldwide and continue to do so today.

However, more recently the group has received praise for their remixes of songs by artists such as Bruno Mars and, teen prodigy, Madeon. While this bolsters attention for the upcoming release this makes a fan like myself incredibly impatient. However, I’m sure myself and others are more excited about the possibility of more live shows and the next installment in the Metropolis series.

The 80s influence in the M Machine’s work in almost undeniable and still applies to this second release. So if you’re a fan of that aesthetic, which I hope you are, you are going to enjoy its refreshing take in The M Machine’s latest releases “Palaces” and “Ghosts in the Machine”.

With great anticipation and impatience I wait for Metropolis Pt. II hoping it lives up to the phenomenal release that was Metropolis Pt. I. But for now I leave you with this sneak peek at the upcoming album.

After years of dealing with record labels and paying back cash advances Whitby, Ontario’s Protest the Hero is taking a page out of the DIY handbook. Via the website www.indiegogo.com the Canadian Metal band is attempting to fund their next album by reaching out to their fans. All explained in the above video is a plan to get fans involved in the process of making an album.

Now, you aren’t just supporting a band that you might like but you also get perks depending upon how much you donate to the cause ranging from a digital copy of the album to an opportunity to have yourself featured in the album itself in some capacity.

An established band, at least by Canadian standards, Protest the Hero is not exactly forced into this position. However, it leads one to question why a band would do this. Is it to escape some of the constraints that exist in the music industry similar to recent Nest project to bypass label distribution? Or is it a gimmick to help promote the next album above and beyond the band’s last three releases? Either way with a goal of $125 000 the band has, or should I say had, their sights set high. However, as of this morning, in just 18 hours, the band has raised $114 590 and there is no sign of stopping.

My next question is what does this mean for the album? Will having fans fund the album raise the stakes for the band and add pressure to produce a great album? It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Nevertheless, what this blogger is most interested in is what this could mean for other established bands. Might this be a new method for established bands to collaborate with fans in producing albums instead of recouping the money from record labels? Will we see this in the future from other established musicians and is it truly viable as an option to create a record. I supposed Protest the Hero might be the guinea pig.

River Tiber is a one man sound, layered upon itself, flipped, reversed, distorted then puzzled together with subtle elegance.
Meshing intricate acoustic music with electronic elements River Tiber, more commonly known as Tommy Paxton-Beesley, is definitely on this blogger’s radar after his recent release entitled Synapse.
Beautifully arranged acoustics are intertwined with samples and electronic components creating something akin to what Bon Iver created with his self-titled album but still wholly unique. It seems more in tune with the electronic side of things in my opinion but without being forgetful of the other genres at play. A great balance is what is achieved by River Tiber’s Synapse, somewhere hovering between a hopeful future and nostalgia, between dark and light, and between flight and fall.
Paxton-Beesley, a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist, recorded and wrote the album all on his own though he performs with a band live. An incredible process it must have been to record and sample Vocals, Guitar, Keys, Bass, Drums, Cello, Violin, and Trombone besides all of the programming and production work. The final product is elegantly gritty, moody and dark electronica that throws you down a different path with each song.  Though I may be too quick in labelling it as simply electronica.
Simply put River Tiber is an incredible artist who presents to the world beautiful music that I am necessitated to talk about. You can download his album for free from the links provided below.

Off of the success of their debut album Man Alive and on the verge of their sophomore release Arc Everything Everything is proving to be a definite up and comer for 2013.

Everything Everything, a British indie four-piece, has been around since about 2007 but started making waves in 2010 by making the long list for the British Sound of 2010. Unfortunately, the band didn’t make the shortlist but fought back with debut album, Man Alive, which gained them shortlist status for the coveted Mercury Prize in 2011.

Everything Everything want to classify their music as pop and in some aspects it does fill that genre but in too many ways the album is alternative and seems to evade genre classification. Their use of indie rock guitar and drum paired with electronic elements is something I’ve seen a lot of in music lately. There seems to be a sort of convergence between the rock and electronic realms of music and the result is not an unpleasant one at all.

Everything Everything’s unique mixture of acoustic and electronic elements lends something quite new to the ears. This band is a genuine reflection of a growing cohort of not only genre-bending artists but also listeners who have an eclectic taste in music. It is my hope that bands such as Everything Everything will make for an interesting new year.

The latest EP release from Skrillex has the EDM world a buzz. Following the announcement of OWSLA’s the Nest subscription service many expected to hear more from Sonny Moore. His Leaving EP is an example of what exactly the service has to offer. Exhibiting a completely different sound from what we are used to from Skrillex the extended play seems to confuse die hard fans and receive mixed reviews. While some wonder where the hard bass drops have disappeared to others have embraced the new sound created in hotel rooms across North America. The EP seems to draw influence from genres such as ambient electronica and future garage made popular by contemporary artist, Burial. Whether this is a new artistic direction for Skrillex or a critique on current EDM genres it proves to be an example of how an artist can expand their musical horizons when unrestricted from the barriers that be in the music industry. What else does the Nest have in store? No one knows. The following is a letter from Sonny Moore.

Leaving EP
hello everybody
first of all, i want to thank you so much for supporting the Nest.  this is not about changing the music industry now, it’s about supporting great and forward thinking tools like drip.fm to connect us on a more personal level.  the fact that we have a direct way to give you guys content without any of the red tape that the normal distribution mediums have makes it really easy fun for us and gives us a new platform to be creative and spontaneous.  we hope you know that we put a great effort into providing awesome stuff straight to you.
Here are some songs that i put together for an ep that came together last minute.  scary bolly dub is a song I’ve been playing in my sets for a while.  I use it more as a dj tool, but I wanted you guys to have it.
The reason and Leaving came together last minute.  I made Leaving in my hotel room in mexico and just finished the Reason an hour ago in my hotel room in miami.  I guess it’s just kind of a reflection of how I’m feeling right now.  Hope you guys enjoy these quality wavs.
sincerely,

HIGHS from Toronto, Ontario are not your conventional indie pop band. While the music is upbeat and dance-worthy their ability to fuse that genre with ambient sounds and afro beats adds another layer to the music giving it a sort of tropical. A definite far cry away from some of the cold winters we have here in Toronto. This band reminds me a lot of the work Vampire Weekend does. It is sort of like indie pop with a thoughtful twist.
